King George III Bone Dice

A good pair of late 18th or early 19th century, small bone dice bearing the King's Crown to indicate that tax duty had been paid. One dice has a clear Crown outline mark, while the other has an indistinct red impression.

The "Stamp Tax Act 1765" was introduced for many different items, ordering that 10-shillings would be payable on the purchase of a pair of dice. Taxed items were therefor marked to show that duty had been paid. One of the purposes of this Act was to subjugate the citizens in America and for them to pay for the military forces in the colonies. Typically, such dice would have been carried by many a soldier.
